Principals are the superheroes of our public schools, called daily to navigate messy, complex and human-centered challenges on their campuses and in their communities. To do this effectively takes more than just a good boss—it takes a highly effective leader, equipped with the skills to be resilient, innovative and inspirational.
Today, the importance of a role that has always been challenging and complex role, has now been compounded by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. It has exacerbated inequities and surfaced new challenges that many of us never even imagined would exist, putting even more pressure on our school leaders. Now, more than ever, there is a critical need to ensure that all principals have the skills and support that they need to lead to and through this crisis—and perhaps even emerge from the pandemic stronger than before.

Panel #1: The Importance of Resilience, Innovation & Inspiration - Today & Everyday
Pandemic aside, we know that the role of the school leader is incredibly complex and that no day in the principalship is without its challenges. Whether it’s the teacher who quits unexpectedly, problem solving around a floundering curriculum initiative, or navigating tough conversations about racial equity, leaders are called every day to approach their work with resilience, innovation & inspiration. Learn from PIC leaders as they share their own leadership trials, lessons in navigating them, and what’s at stake if we don’t invest in cultivating these critical skills in all school leaders.
Panel #2: Leading in a Pandemic with Resilience, Innovation & Inspiration - Insights & Lessons Learned
The Covid-19 outbreak irrevocably changed the landscape public education. Communities everywhere turned to school leaders for guidance as we faced unimaginable challenges, heightening fears and exacerbating inequities. The burden that school leaders were asked to carry during this time was particularly taxing, as 45% of principals nationally report plans to exit their roles sooner as a result of the pandemic. Yet, at the same time 81% of PIC leaders reported feeling more empowered to persist in their role. In this discussion, PIC leaders will share their own experiences and lessons learned leading during the pandemic, as well as insights on how they did so with resilience, innovation & inspiration.
Panel #3: Looking Ahead: Navigating the 2020 School Year- Advice for Peers & Advocates
The term “new normal” has become commonplace in our homes and workplaces, yet there are few places impacted more greatly by it than our public schools. As leaders continue to navigate a post-Covid world marked also by deep-rooted racial inequities, they will need the support their peers and their communities. Hear from PIC leaders as they share advice for other principals heading into this new school year, as well as what types of support they hope to see coming from their districts and other community partners and advocates in the space.
